Sunny Leone is certainly here to stay. The former ‘Bigg Boss 5’ contestant has made her way to the mainstream showbiz world with élan. She is the brand ambassador of a mobile brand, a condom brand, a campaigner for PETA India, a film actress and now even the chief guest at NCP leader Kiran Dagade Patil’s Dahi Handi celebration in Pune.
Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, Sunny’s godfather, has helped her create a niche in the industry and the actress can do little but accept all the plump offers that she is being flooded with. Her debut film ‘Jism2’ has been in news, right from its inception stage and continues to do so after its release, for all obvious reasons. Pooja Bhatt, the director of the film helped Sunny discover the actress in her and in turn rediscovered her own directorial skills!
Pooja’s first three directorial ventures failed to create an impression at the Box Office and her efforts almost went unnoticed. But with ‘Jism 2’, the actor-director gaine
d the much needed recognition and swayed followers who were dying to watch Sunny Leone grace the Indian silver screen.
The Indo-American porn star, who has now decided to dedicate the next two years of her career to Bollywood is flooded with offers and is basking in the adulation that she has been receiving from her fans across the country.
However, as it was expected, a din surrounded the film and its heroine and both have been subjected to severe flak and outrageous comments as well.
The official Twitter handle of the film tweeted, “From a rousing welcome in Kolkata for Sunny to Mahila Mandals threatening to disrupt show & throw eggs on her in Hyd! Amazing India #Jism2(sic).”
The cast of ‘Jism 2’-Sunny Leone, Randeep Hooda and Arunoday Singh were busy touring the length and breadth of the country to promote their much controversial film. While millions applauded them, the moral police didn’t waste any second to whiplash them by either disrupting screenings of the film, abusing the audience watching the film, or even threatening to throw eggs at them.
In order to prevent a clash during the promotion of the film in Hyderabad, the ‘Jism 2’ team decided not to let Sunny make an appearance there.
Though the city police had offered protection, they “did not think it right to stretch the police force to their limit to combat this insanity!”
But will creating a ruckus over the inclusion of a porn star in a mainstream Bollywood film do any good to the current state of women who are being abused in the country?
Were the Mahila Mandal members seeking safe refuge in fear when common women across the nation were being molested, raped and assaulted? Aren’t posters of C-grade adult films posted on the walls near busy market areas catching their attention? Why can’t they stop production of illegal adult films and Indian porn sites that are a huge rage? What are they doing to prevent human trafficking? Are they doing anything to better the plight of sex-workers in the country? Have they rescued women and young girls from flesh trade? How many of these Mahilas have really stood strong to fight for women’s rights?
The Mahila Mandals in question are only trying to make the most of the situation by trying to defame the filmmakers. And creating a chaos over ‘Jism 2’ is pointless. Most Indians might never be able to digest the presence of a porn star in Indian cinema, but that certainly doesn’t give anyone the authority to disrupt the screening of the film. There are far more important issues waiting to be addressed. So it would be better if they focus on the betterment of the society at large.
