New Delhi: The Income Tax Department should adopt a responsive taxpayer-centric regime and focus on dealing with the menace of both domestic as well as overseas black money, Revenue Secretary Shaktikanta Das has said.

The objectives of the department should be "a responsive taxpayer-centric regime, combating cross border and domestic black money, sharing of information with other agencies, among others," Das added.

He made these remarks at the valedictory address of the two-day conference of Principal Chief Commissioners of Income Tax, Principal Director Generals of Income Tax, Chief Commissioners of Income Tax and Director Generals of Income Tax here.

Summing up the deliberations and the two-day conference, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairperson Anita Kapur said officers should realise the need for keeping the taxpayer at the centre of all actions taken by the department.

There have been several key take-aways from deliberations held over two days, she added.

"In particular, ideas on adding new taxpayers have been put forth along with ways to expeditiously redress grievances of the taxpayers which are two of the thrust areas for this conference," she said.

The conclusions that have emerged from the conference will be further discussed in the CBDT and appropriate directions and guidelines will be issued, she added.

Meanwhile, addressing senior officials of Income Tax Department, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya emphasised on the critical role played by manufacturing sector in generating prosperity for the nation.
