New Delhi: Clearly buoyed by the massive win in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP said on Friday that it was the beginning of a new era.

Addressing a press conference in the national capital, BJP president Rajnath Singh said that though he was very happy at the big win by the NDA, he was also aware of the responsibilities bestowed by the people on the party.

“This is first time after 1984 that any party has got a majority on its own. This is people's mandate for change,” Rajnath said, adding, “I believe that this mandate is also for Modi's popularity.”

Commenting on BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Rajnath said that the Gujarat CM had worked very hard. “He worked very hard along with other party workers. I do not think that any leader addressed so many rallies during the course of any campaign,” party president said.

He added, “This is the beginning of a new era.”

Talking about BJP's poll campaign Rajnath said, “Our agenda was good governance and development in these polls. The Opposition tried to divert the discourse elsewhere. However, we won because of our agenda and Modi's dynamism, ” adding, “Modi has once again resorted the faith in politicians amongst the people.”

The BJP president also said that the party's track record of good governance was one of the reasons for their victory. “Time has come to rewrite the Indian success story,” Rajnath said while congratulating party workers and also the NDA allies.

At the same time he emphasized the fact that the BJP was no longer a party of the urban class. “It is also now a party of the rural folks , the poor, the farmers, the tribals and so on,” he said.

Rajnath said that the BJP would take everyone along in the growth and development of the country.

He also congratulated the people of India for coming out to vote in huge numbers.

On Cabinet formation Rajnath said that it was the PM's prerogative. On party patriarch LK Advani's role he said, “He is our top leader and like our guardian.”

The BJP has won a majority on its own with the NDA crossing the 300 mark.
