 Sydney: Former Test fast bowler Merv Hughes has advised the Australian cricketers to grow facial hair in order to hit back in the third Test against India, after Australia suffered humiliating losses in both the Chennai and the Hyderabad Tests.
The former cricketer, who is famous for his bushy moustache and probing tongue, said that facial hair brings out the best in players and added that during his playing days, many players had moustaches, specially former Oz batsman David Boon and former England captain Graham Gooch.
A former Test selector, Hughes said that he would like to see the current Australian batch with moustaches, beards, goatees, half-beards and half-shaved heads, adding that the style of sporting facial hair should be brought back to the game.
Praising opener David Warner for growing a beard for the Indian tour, Hughes said that growing facial hair is not just a fashion statement, as many players grew beards to protect their face from the sun when they come to the sub-continent to play.
Speaking on the dismal performance of the Australians, Hughes said that the age of professionalism and big-money contracts has robbed Australian cricket of players like himself, David Boon and Shane Warne.
A number of Australians have adopted a hirsute look on this tour, including Warner, Phillip Hughes and Matthew Wade.
