New Delhi: Defending champions England kicked off their campaign in style as they defeated Afghanistan by 116 runs.

Scorecard »IEng vs Afghanistan: Match report»

Afghanistan 80 ALL OUT

A valiant effort from Gulbodin Naib (44 from 32). But the total was too much as Naib was the only batsman to score in double figures in the second innings. England won the match by 119 runs!

Over 15, Afghanistan 64/9:

Gulbodin Naib has hit Dernbach for two consecutive huge sixes and is looking dangerous. He has so far scored 35 runs from 24 balls.

Over 10, Afghanistan 26/8:

Afghanistan are wobbling at 26/8. None of the batsmen have managed to score in double figures. It is possible the end for Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup.

Over 5, Afghanistan 22/3:

Finn, Dernbach and Broad scalped one wicket each and this match looks like another one-sided affair.

Over 20, England 196/5 :

It was Brendon McCullum who played a stupendous knock against Bangladesh and now Luke Wright has played another magnificent knock. Wright missed the well deserved century by one run, but England would be extremely proud of his knock. Wright scored 99 runs from just 55 balls which had 8 boundaries and 6 sixes.

Over 15, England 109/2 :

Luke Wright reached his fifty off just 34 balls. They have added 33 runs in the last 5 overs. The stage is all set for both of them to go berserk in the death overs.

Over 10, England 74/2 :

Wright and Hales did really well to score runs freely before Hales (31 from 27) was run-out in the tenth over. Before being dismissed, Hales added 74 runs for the second wicket with Wright who played some excellent strokes.

Over 5, England 38/1 :

Shapoor Zadran got the first breakthrough for his side as he dismissed Kieswetter in the first over. After that Luke Wright and Alex Hales rebuilt the innings with a cautious approach. At the end of 4 over, England were 15/1. But both the batsmen changed gears in the fifth over bowled by Zadran and smashed the left-arm pacer for 23 runs!

Afghanistan have won the toss and they have decided to field first.
