 London: England manager Roy Hodgson has said that medals mean more than money to his players.
The FA has already banked more than 10 million pounds from England’s Euro 2012 successes to date, and if Hodgson’s team goes all the way and win next Sunday’s final it will be worth 18.54 million pounds.
“The money is the last thing on the players’ minds. I have no idea what it’s worth. It would mean a lot more to us as footballers if we win it in terms of when we retire from football many years hence it would be nice to see a medal hanging round our necks,” he said.
FA bosses were guaranteed an initial 6.45 million pounds for qualifying for the finals under Fabio Capello, reports said.
Getting through to the last eight means the FA are already certain to make a profit from the tournament even when the players’ bonus scheme and the costs of their Krakow base are taken into account.
Victory over Italy in Kiev would be worth a further 2.418 million pounds and getting through to the final would guarantee a further 3.626 million pounds if England finish as runners-up and 6.043 million pounds if they are crowned champions of Europe.
England players do not receive a penny when they wear the Three Lions, having agreed to put all their appearance fees into the Bobby Moore Fund for cancer research.
