17-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, hasn`t won a major since his Wimbledon triumph in 2012 and the Swiss maestro will be eager to end the drought at the US Open which starts on Monday. After Spaniard, Rafael Nadal, who withdrew from the event due to a wrist injury last Monday, the onus has shifted on Federer and Novak Djokovic to go big at the Flushing Meadows.

Nadal`s exit saw Federer rise up to the second seed and it`s guaranteed that he would not have to face World No. 1 Novak Djokovic until the final, should they both make it. With the form both players are in, it looks a possibility for the duo to face off in the finale.

The resurgent Swiss arrives in New York off a hardcourt title at Cincinnati and will open his campaign against Australian Marinko Matosevic. Federer does not face any big guns early on and will take on a promising Grigir Dimitrov of Bulgaria, in the quarter-finals. On the other hand, Djokovic is slated to meet either Scot Andy Murray or Frenchman Jo Wilfred Tsonga, in the quarters. He also has to face the likes of Stan Wawrinka, John Isner and Milos Raonic along the way.

Federer lost to Djokovic in a five-set thriller at Wimbledon finals in July, and he knows the importance of the year`s last Slam. Federer has looked good this year and has broken off the rustiness that saw him falter in the last couple of seasons. The last time Federer won the US Open was in 2008 and the following year he lost the title to Juan Martin del Potro in the final. Five years has gone since then and Federer will hope to make it to the finishing line at the Flushing Meadows.

So with a relatively easy draw, Federer will look for a magical 18 (Slams). It is an opportunity for the Swiss brand to make it his time in New York but in the way will be his recent conqueror, Novak Djokovic.
