London: Britain`s Victoria Pendleton fought off a determined charge from China`s Shuang Guo to win the women`s keirin track cycling event here at the Olympics Friday.
Pendleton surged past the field on the outside soon after the derny departed the track, stretching out a considerable lead, but was almost reeled in by Guo, who took silver and Hong Kong`s bronze medallist Lee Wai Sze.
For Pendleton, 31, the result was consolation after she was relegated in the women`s team sprint Thursday alongside partner Jess Varnish for an illegal changeover.
She will also compete in the women`s sprint Sunday.
Pendleton`s gold was Britain`s third of the day and fourth in cycling competitions so far.
