Full Name: Geeta Phogat
Age: 23 years
Weight: 55 kg
Sports: Wrestling (Freestyle)
Geeta Phogat made history when she became the first ever female wrestler from India to qualify for the Olympics.
The 23-year-old booked a berth in the 55-kg category after clinching gold at the Asian Qualifying Tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan, in April. However, her younger sister Babita, also a wrestler, failed to make the cut.
Coached by her father Mahavir Singh who himself is a former wrestler, Geeta grew up in a strict environment, competing with the boys.
Her claim to fame was the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, where she won a gold medal in the women’s 55-kg category.
Geeta has expressed full confidence of a good show at the Olympics.
