Somdev Kishore Devvarman was born in Guwahati, Assam. He shifted to Kolkata with his family when he was 3-4 months old.
By the age of 8 his family moved to Chennai, Tamil Nadu and he stayed there until he decided to go to USA and play collegiate tennis from University of Virginia.
He grabbed everyone’s attention when he reached three consecutive finals at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), winning back-to-back finals in his junior and senior years.
He became only the 4th person in the history of NCAA circuit to do so.
An Arjuna Award (2011) recipient, Somdev has won the Gold medal in the Men`s Singles event of 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games and followed it up with both Men`s Singles and Doubles Gold in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, China.
Somdev has qualified for men’s singles event in the London Olympics as a wild card entrant.
TRIVIA
He is the grandson of Tripura`s late royal scion Bikramendra Kishore Debbarman, popularly known as Bidurkarta.
