`One Planet Centre` opened at London Olympics VillageLondon: Athletes at the London Olympics will have an opportunity to inspire people across the globe, by helping to raise awareness about environmental issues, and explaining how people from their home country can take simple actions towards a more sustainable future.

Opened on Wednesday, the One Planet Centre, at the heart of the Olympics Village, is an interactive hub filled with activities and information about the positive steps that can be taken to help build a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.

Through a series of fun, social events and competitions, athletes will be able to find out more about reducing energy use, cutting waste, and protecting the environment.

By combining the power of social media, with the charismatic and inspirational role-model leadership which Olympic and Paralympic athletes provide to young people, the One Planet Centre plays a vital part of the London 2012 Games` desire to build a better world for future generations.

"Sustainability has been at the heart of the bid to hold the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games’ from the construction of the Olympic Park, to the staging of the Games and the long legacy they will leave behind," UK Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said while opening the Centre.

"Our investment in the One Planet Centre will help Olympic athletes to return to their home countries as ambassadors for creating a sustainable future and a greener planet."
