Fernando Alonso is an enigma, says former Ferrari tech director

New Delhi: Former Ferrari technical director Aldo Costa says that Fernando Alonso is an enigma. Costa, who is now with Mercedes, admits that the Spaniard driver is a difficult man to fathom.

The 53-year-old Italian engineer was sacked as technical director of Ferrari in 2011, a year after the arrival of Fernando Alonso in Maranello from Renault. Costa added that during their short time together, he witnessed Fernando Alonso`s exceptional talent as a driver.

"I consider Fernando a true great when he is in the car, driving. Out of the car, I was never able to understand him; to me he is an indecipherable character, an enigma," Costa added.

Fernando Alonso won back to back Formula One World Driver`s Championship titles in 2005 and 2006 as a Renault driver. In the process, he became the youngest ever double champions at the age of 25 years.

Denying a possible re-union, Costa revealed that Alonso will not be coming to at the German stable, as he does not see why Lewis Hamilton should want to leave a team like Mercedes.
