Chennai: India`s continued their miserable
showing in the 23rd FIBA Asian Women Basketball Championship
with the hosts slumping to their fifth successive defeat when
Japan beat them 58-100 here today.
India`s hopes of holding on to their place in the elite
Level-I group now rests on the play off tie against Level-II
leaders Malaysia tomorrow.
Contrary to the result, India started off on a bright
note and raced on to a 6-0 lead through three pointers by
Anitha Pauldorai and Prashanthi Singh, but could not sustain
the momentum for long with the Japanese quickly closing the
gap.
India wilted under sustained pressure, with the Japanese
easily piercing the hosts defence.
Though Japan led the first quarter by just a one point,
they raised their game in the second half and went into the
half time with scores reading 55-31 on their behalf.
India could not regroup as a team and their scoring
percentage also went down, while the Japanese went on to
convert their half chances into baskets.
