Sochi: Brazil reacted with delight Thursday after the International Rugby Board handed automatic Rio 2016 Games slots to their men`s and women`s Rugby Sevens teams.
"We are delighted that the IRB has taken this decision, which will not only increase excitement for Rugby`s return to the Olympic Games in Rio but also help create further positive momentum for the sport of Rugby in Brazil," said Rio 2016 Organising Committee President Carlos Nuzman.
The International Olympic Committee recently established a qualification process designed to see broad representation of countries in the event as well as participation of the best teams and players.
Although not a power even in the region compared with neighboring Argentina, rugby is growing in Brazil with participation up by more than 25 per cent since 2011.
In sevens, Brazil are currently ranked outside the world top 30.
IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset said in a statement: "The decision to include Brazil is good for Rugby, good for Brazil and good for the Games.
"Rugby in Brazil is experiencing rapid growth and inclusion will generate further impetus and excitement, while giving the Brazilian Rugby family and sports fans across the nation something really special to look forward to at their home Olympic Games."
Last year, the IRB injected $400,000 into rugby in Brazil and its Get into Rugby program attracted 9,000 children for a first taste of the sport.
Four Olympic berths will be obtained via the 2014/15 Sevens World Series.
The remainder will comprise one from each of the six IRB regional competitions, one from a world play-off and Brazil`s automatic slot.
On February 21-22 Sao Paulo will host the third round of the IRB Women`s Sevens World Series with Brazil currently ranked eighth.
