Zeenews Sports BureauMelbourne: Indian tennis sensation Somdev Devvarman crashed out of the Australian Open after a valiant performance against 24th seed Jerzy Janowicz today.
In a fiercely competitive match, Somdev took the first set in a close tie-break before gaining further momentum, winning the second set 6-3. But the Pole came right back into the game, dominating the next two sets, winning them 6-1, 6-0.
The final set began in much the same way the previous two sets had progressed with Janowicz taking a 5-2 lead. But Somdev fought on to break back and get level at 5-5.
In spite of the fight-back, though, the 22 year-old Pole held serve, before breaking Devvarman in the important 12th game of the final set, winning the match 6-7 (12), 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, 7-5.
The Indian may not have reached the third round but he’s definitely shown that he has the chops to compete, given the way he stretched his much-higher ranked opponent. Janowicz, meanwhile, will face Nicolas Almagro in Round 3.
