Not quite often do we see a 100th ranked player stunning the second best racquet wielder in the world and that too at a prestigious tournament.
However, on Thursday when the whole world had its eyes set on the high profile Euro Cup clash between Germany and Italy, a little-known Czech swiftly overpowered his much fancied opponent, forcing them to shift their gaze to the Centre Court at Wimbledon.
26-year-old Lukas Rosol registered the biggest win of his tennis career as he defeated last year’s runner up Rafael Nadal 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in five sets to move to the third round of Wimbledon 2012.
Rosol hails from Brono, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, and this is his only sixth appearance in a Grand Slam event after turning pro in 2004. His best ever show at majors came in last year’s French Open when he made it to the third round where he lost to Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina.
Before outshining Nadal on Thursday, the 6’5” Czech had only 18 wins on the ATP tour to his name.
As per information provided by ATP on its website, Rosol began playing tennis at the age of six. His favorite surface is clay and likes watching sports.
He plays with double-handed backhand both sides and is coached by former ATP pro Slava Dosedel.
