Karaikal: In a jolt for the ruling Congress in Puducherry, veteran leader and former Minister M Chandrakasu on Saturday joined the rival All India NR Congress led by former Chief Minister N Rangasamy.

Chandrakasu joined the NR Congress along with hundreds of his supporters in the presence of N Ranagasamy at Nedunkadu, his home constituency here.

Chandrakasu had contested from Nedunkadu for seven consecutive terms since 1980 on Congress ticket. He won five times. He served as the Minister for Social Welfare and Industries for three terms.

Welcoming him into the party, Rangasamy alleged that the ruling Congress Government had not properly implemented welfare and development schemes.

Chandrakasu claimed that persons like him had been forced to leave the Congress party. "NR Congress is not a new political party, but a split group of the Congress," he said.

Congress had lost all the four seats it contested from Karaikal district in the 2006 assembly elections.
