Mandla: Senior lady IAS officer, Shashi Karnavat, was awarded five years rigorous imprisonment and slapped with a fine of Rs 50 lakh by a local court on Friday in connection with a scam involving printing and purchasing registers worth Rs 34 lakh without inviting tenders.

The scam took place in the year 1999-2000 when she was posted as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the District Panchayat at Mandla.

The sentence was awarded by First Additional Sessions Judge Rajiv Karmhe, the prosecution said.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh in the matter.

Soon after the judgement, the court ordered the police to take her to prison.

Besides Karnavat, the court also awarded five years' rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the district panchayat's then storekeeper, Virendra Shrivas.

It also awarded five years' sentence and imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh on the printing press owner Rakesh Sahu, besides awarding a five years' sentence and imposing a fine of Rs 15 lakh on another owner Rajeshwari Sahu, the prosecution said.

Karnavat, who is now posted as Deputy Secretary in the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, was present in the court when the sentence was pronounced.
