Chennai: Three Delhi Police commandos, participating in the ongoing All India Police Commando Competition here, were injured on Thursday as some abandoned munition exploded when one of them stepped on it during a pratice session, police said.

23-year old Sandeep, who stepped on the munition, has been admitted to a hospital with leg injuries and would undergo a surgery while two others with minor injuries were treated as outpatients, Tamil Nadu DGP K Ramanujam told.

Commando units from 16 states and seven paramilitary forces are participating in the six-day competition being held at Oonamancheri near suburban Tambaram.

The Delhi team had gone for practice at Hanumanthapuram firing range and went into a nearby forest area for "operational practice" when the incident occurred.

Sandeep stepped on certain "material suspected to be some abandoned piece of munition," the DGP said.

While Sandeep was injured in his leg, Amit Malik (23) and Mahender Singh (25) who were a little distance away received minor injuries.

Sandeep has been admitted to SRM Medical College Hospital in the city outskirts. Top police officials, including a DIG and Kancheepuram District SP, are at the hospital, police said.
