New Delhi: Internet giant Google is celebrating freedom fighter, poet and politician Sarojini Naidu’s 135th birthday with a doodle on its homepage for Indian users on Thursday.
Sarojini Naidu, also known as the Nightingale of India, was born on February 13, 1879 in Hyderabad.
A child prodigy, activist and a poet, she was the first female president of Indian National Congress and first female Governor of Uttar Pradesh.
In order to mark her 135th birthday, the internet giant put a beautiful portrait of Sarojini Naidu in the place of second ‘O’ within its official logo. Google also included a pen in place of ‘L’ within its official logo to indicate Sarojini Naidu’s writing prowess.
The Google doodle also contains shade of Indian flag in the background and in letters of its official logo.
Sarojini Naidu had great interest in poetry from the childhood days onwards. In 1905 she published a collection of poems entitled ‘Golden threshold’. It got so much of appreciation and Sarojini Naidu also recognized as ‘bul bule hind’. Jawaharlal Nehru and Rabindranath Tagore admire for her many works and Gopal Krishna Gokhale advised her to use language power for inspire people for making a free India.
Sarojini Naidu travelled across India for enlightening women to fight for India's independence, after her meeting with Mahatma Gandhi. In 1925 Sarojini Naidu also elected as the first female president of Indian National Congress.
Naidu played a pivotal role during the Civil Disobedience movement. She also faced arrest in 1942 during the "Quit India" movement.
Post-Independence, she served as the first Governor of the United Provinces from 1947 to 1949 and also contributed to the drafting of the Indian Constitution.
Her writing career began at the age of 13 and her major contribution was in the field of poetry. The Golden Threshold, her first collection of poems, was published in 1905. The Feather of The Dawn was edited and published posthumously in 1961 by her daughter Padamaja.
Sarojini Naidu suffered a heart attack and died on March 2, 1949 at Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.
