Burdwan: Two members of a gang who had escaped from a prison van on way to a court at Chinsura in Hoogly district by spraying chilli powder on accompanying policemen were arrested from here.

Burdwan superintendent of police S M H Mirza said the two were arrested last night following a tip off.

The two were part of a five-member gang who were being taken to the court on February 10. They sprayed chilli powder in the eyes of the accompanying additional sub-inspector of police and three constables, beat them up and made good their escape.

The policemen are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Chinsurah.

Two other members of the gang were rounded up the same night and police are on the look out for the fifth member - a woman, he said.

The gang was allegedly involved in dacoity and rape of a girl at Polba in Hoogly district in 2012.
