Kuala Lumpur: Amid the demand from some sections of Malaysian Indian Congress for the resignation of party president Samy Vellu, a prominent political activist has said that the ethnic Indian leader is democratically elected and should complete his term which runs until 2012.

Former MIC women's wing leader Jaya Parthiban said that no one had the right to ask Vellu, 73, to step down as he had been democratically elected to the post.

He should be allowed to complete his term which runs until 2012, she said in a statement.

Vellu has been at the helm of the MIC for three decades should not step down from his post.

She said only MIC delegates had the right to decide who should lead the party.

Jaya was commenting on recent reports calling for Samy Vellu to quit his post and hand over the reins to his deputy G. Palanivel.

"If anyone wants to take over the party, he should contest and get the support of the delegates in a democratic manner," she said.

Jaya claimed the party delegates still valued Samy Vellu's leadership and had full confidence in him.
