At Eden’s Theatre of Dreams, Hashim Amla nearly pulled off a miracle with his marathon 8-hour batting effort and almost spoilt India’s quest to retain their Numero Uno status in the ICC team rankings for Test playing nations.

It looked as if the memories of that epic innings which turned around one of Test cricket’s greatest ever game were still afresh. Watching Laxman bat in 2010 against South Africa at Eden Gardens on third day’s morning, my thoughts often strayed to the spring of 2001.

Since my early childhood, as far back as I can recall, cricket has always enthralled me. Not just as a game, but at one stage, it had become a beacon of my life. India ended 2009 spectacularly, touching the zenith with the numero uno status in Test cricket after they thumped the touring Sri Lankan side 2-0. Excited by the new found status of number one Test side in the world, the cricket fraternity shockingly found that newly crowned champs would play only two Tests in entire calendar year of 2010. That too against Bangladesh! This would surely make it difficult for them to hold on to the present glory.

Abhimanyu Mithun…W.T.F. He is not even ten weeks old in first class circuit. That was my immediate reaction after I heard that the wise men of Indian selection panel have included Wridhiman Saha and rookie pacer Abhimanyu Mithun for a series which is being touted as World Championship of Test cricket. For a battle which is being projected as the cricketing battle of the year that will reincarnate interest in Tests, I think that the decision could have been looked into a bit more deeply.<br/&

Bangladesh really need to get a move on. How long can they expect to be treated like infants in Test cricket?

The year was 1970. The ICC had voted to indefinitely ban South Africa from international cricket for practicing apartheid, which meant that they refused to select any colored cricketers in the national team or play against any countries other than those with white players.

Two of the three best spinners of our generation- Shane Warne and Anil Kumble- have already hung-up their boots. The other- Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan- is on the verge of calling it a day. He has already hinted that time has come for him to quit international cricket.
