CWG 2014 : Trivia

1. This will be the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games. The first was hosted by Canada, in 1930 and it was known as the British Empire Games.

2. There will be 6,500 athletes from 71 nations competing in 17 sports over 11 days.

3. Australia leads the way with a staggering 803 gold medals and are the only nation with over 2,000 medals.

4. The first time an Asian country hosted the Games was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 1998.

5. The three core values of the Commonwealth Games (adopted in 2001) are: Humanity, Equality & Destiny.

6. India have been to twelve Games, since attending their first Games in 1934.

7. Scotland`s Glasgow is hosting Commonwealth Games for the first time. However, the country`s capital city Edinburgh hosted the event twice (1970 and 1986).

8. A total of 35,000 spectators are expected for the Opening Ceremony at Celtic Park.

9. In 1998, the Queen’s Baton was carried into the stadium on an elephant.

10. Only six nations have attended every Commonwealth Games - Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales.
