It was yet another abject surrender by the batsman, who were shot out for 94 in just 29.2 overs as they continued their embarrassing display succumbing to their heaviest Test defeat in 40 years.
This was after England took a gigantic 338 runs lead with a healthy first innings score of 486 riding on a brilliant 149 not out by Joe Root. The series win enabled Alastair Cook and his boys to retain the Pataudi Trophy for the second straight time in three years.
SCORECARD» | Day 3 REPORT» =========================================================================================India 2nd InningsOver 29.2 || Score 94With the wicket of Ishant Sharma,
India lost the fifth and final Test at Oval, with an innings and 244 runs. Another shameful defeat for Team India as they lost the match within three days. Awful batting display by India led to this tragic defeat. With the win at Oval, the hosts won the series 3-1. England team just outplayed India in all the departments.
I Sharma c Ali b Jordan 2 (4b) =========================================================================================Over 26 || Score 74/8Chris Jordan is on a roll here. He picked two wickets in a an over. First, R Ashwin gave a simple catch to slip cordon and then Bhuvneshwar Kumar followed him in almost similar fashion. Disappointing batting display once again by Indian batsmen. Now it's just a matter of time for the hosts to win the series by 3-1. Binny and Varun Aaron are in the middle for India.
Aaron Out! Another run-out. Aaron placed the ball towards on side and ran for a double but Moeen Ali was quite accurate with his throw and Aaron fell short of his crease. Indian batsmen once again fell like a pack of cards.
VR Aaron run out 1 (3b) B Kumar c Bell b Jordan 4 (4b) R Ashwin c Bell b Jordan 7 (9b) =========================================================================================Over 25 || Score 70/6Chris Jordan has been introduced into the attack for the first time in the 22nd over. And he didn't disappoint his skipper and scalped the wicket of Virat Kohli. A fuller length ball, with a hint of away movement and it went straight inside the hands of Cook, at first slip, after hitting the outside of Kohli's bat. R Ashwin joined Binny in the middle. India are reeling at the moment and are still trailing by 268 runs.
V Kohli c Cook b Jordan 20 (54b) =========================================================================================Over 20 || Score 53/5Double blow for the Indian team, as immediately after losing Rahane, India lost their skipper Dhoni in the very next over bowled by Chris Woakes. Dhoni tried to place the ball towards on side for a single, but got the thick edge of his bat and the ball went inside the hands of short leg fielder after hitting his thigh pad. India are now on the verge of losing the fifth and final Test, after their in-form skipper got out for a duck. India is trailing by 285 runs and they just have five wickets in hand. Stuart Binny is the new man in.
MS Dhoni c Robson b Woakes 0 (5b ) =========================================================================================Over 18 || Score 46/4Rahane Out! Another length ball by Broad and another Indian batsman edge it. But this time at 3rd slip Ballance took a blinder of a catch to send Ajinkya Rahane back to the pavilion. Indian skipper MSD walked in to bat after the fall of India's fourth wicket. Another poor show by the Indian top order.
AM Rahane c Ballance b Broad 4 (15b) =========================================================================================Over 17 || Score 43/3Ajinkya Rahane has joined Kohli in the middle, after the fall of third Indian wicket. Chris Woakes has been introduced into the attack for the very first time in the innings. And Kohli played a confident straight drive off his first over to collect his second boundary.
=========================================================================================Over 13 || Score 30/3When Pujara and Kohli were looking a bit settled in the midlle, Jimmy got the better of Pujara. Peach of a delivery by Anderson and Pujara has no answer to it. A length delivery and Pujara went for a dead straight defence but got the outside edge and Buttler took a simple catch in the end. India is in deep trouble. 3-1 is looking inevitable now.
CA Pujara c Buttler b Anderson 11 (19b) =========================================================================================Over 10 || Score 23/2Both the Indian batsmen in the middle – Kohli and Pujara – are struggling at the moment. In the overcast conditions, Broad and Anderson are looking lethal. If Jimmy is swinging the ball both ways then Broad too is mixing up his deliveries well. Though in between, Pujara played a confident shot towards on-side off Jimmy to collect a boundary in the ninth over.
=========================================================================================Good news for England cricket fans as the covers are out and match will resume in a couple of minutes. Over 6.1 || Score 9/2Vijay Out! A perfect in-swinger by Anderson and Vijay was clueless against it. Ball hit his front pad and umpire raised his finger, without giving it a second thought. Cheteshwar Pujara is the new man in.
Run Out! OoH that's the last thing Indian needed at this moment. Gautam Gambhir played the ball towards on side and tried to steal a single but when he got a 'no call' from the other end, he went back but fell well short of his crease as Chris Woakes hit the stumps within a flash. Heavy rain has started immediately after the fall of India's second wicket. Now it seems as if only a devine intervantion can save Team India.

Over 4 || Score 6/0Can Indian batsmen manage to score some runs in their last innings of the five match series? At the moment it's quite a task for them. Indian openers – Murali Vijay and Gautam Gambhir have come to the middle to face James Anderson and Stuart Broad. After the end of four overs, India managed not to lose any wicket, though Indian openers are not looking very comfortable in the middle.
=========================================================================================England 1st inningsOver 116.3 || Score 486So the hosts got the lead of 338 runs in their first innings. The last wicket that fell was of James Anderson, as Ashwin got him trapped in front of the wicket in his third over of the day. Now it's time for Indian batsmen to show some application when they come in to bat in their second innings.
JM Anderson lbw b Ashwin 1 (14m 5b) =========================================================================================Over 116 || Score 483/9Stuart Broad is scoring runs at a rapid pace. He has started hitting boundaries at will. Indian speedsters are all over the place. MSD should give the ball to R Ashwin now.
Broad Out! Finally the short ball works for India, as Broad gives an easy catch to Kohli. Root is just four runs short of 150-run mark. And the lead is now swell to 335 runs.
SCJ Broad c Kohli b Sharma 37 (21b) =========================================================================================Over 110 || Score 433/8After the fall of Jordan's wicket, Stuart Broad has come to the crease to join Root. And Varun Aaron is the bowler, so it's going to be an interesting contest now. And Broad wins the initial battle as he smashes the speedster for three boundaries in an over, England collect 16 from it.
Joe Root played on! OOH but it's a no ball from Ishant Sharma as he overstepped. Even luck is in not in favour of India. England have now swell their lead to 285 runs.
=========================================================================================Over 108 || Score 407/8Conditions are overcast at Oval and Dhoni has give the ball straight away to his fast bowlers – Ishant Sharma and Varun Aaron. England batsmen are looking to add runs swiftly in the first session of the day. Meanwhile,
Joe Root completed his ton in the third over of the day. It's his fifth Test ton, and second of the series.
Jordan Out! Ishant Sharma gave India their first breakthrough of the day. A perfect pitched ball and Jordan got a thin outside edge of his bat to give a simple catch to Dhoni.
CJ Jordan c Dhoni b Sharma 20 (33b) =========================================================================================On the third Day of the fifth and final Test, where the hosts will look to consolidate their first innings lead of 237 runs, the tourists will try to pick the remaining three wickets in quick succsession. England middle-order Joe Root is just eight runs shy of completing his hundred. Along with Root, Chris Jordan is at the crease, who is unbeaten on 19. The duo have already added 67 runs for the eighth wicket. MS Dhoni-led Indian team is certainly on the back-foot and are struggling in all the departments. If Indian batsmen are finding it difficult to stand in front of the English seamers, then their bowlers are still learning the art of pitching the ball up in such conditions. On top of it, sloppy fielding, especially at slip cordon has been giving the Indian team a tough time in England. So the third day of the final Test is going to be a crucial and interesting for both the teams.
