Introduction

The heart-stopping rivalry is back. The traditional foes – India and Pakistan are set to clash in an all important Asia Cup league match at Shere Bangla Stadium, Mirpur. The winning side will increase its chances to play in the final of the tournament.

Zee Media takes a look at some unforgettable battles between India and Pakistan.

April 18,1986: Pak won the Austral-Asia Cup in Sharjah

One of the epic clashes. In the final, India made 246 in 50 overs with the help of Sunil Gavaskar`s courageous 92-run knock. Indian bowlers led by legendary Kapil Dev started brilliantly by sending four Pakistan batsmen to pavilion with only 110 runs on the board. But Javed Miandad `s batting heroics turned the table. Pakistan needed four runs to win with one ball remaining, which was fulfilled by Miandad`s last ball six off Chetan Sharma over deep mid-wicket. Miadad made 116 runs. Pakistan won the match by 1 wicket and had the last laugh. That six still haunts Sharma.

March, 9, 1996: India won the match in Bangalore

It was Pakistan`s first match against India since 1989. The two teams met at Chinnaswamy stadium and that too in the quarter final of 1996 World Cup. India with the help of scintillating batting display in the death overs by Ajay Jadeja made 287 in fifty overs. Jadeja scored 22 runs in Waqar Younis`s single over. Pakistani Batsmen replied strongly and were at one stage 84 for none. The match is remembered for the on-field battle between Aamer Sohail and Venkatesh Prasad, with the Indian bowler having the last laugh with three crucial strikes including Sohail`s wicket. India won the match comfortably by 39 runs. Waseem Akram, in his prime, couldn`t play the match due to injury thus provoking wild rumours in Pakistan media.

January, 18, 1998: India won the Independence Cup in Dhaka

This match will remain etched in the memories of all cricket lovers. Sourav Ganguly`s 124 runs under pressure led India to win the final of the Independence Cup after Saeed Anwar`s impeccable show with the bat, which was supplemented by Ijaz Ahmed`s ton. Chasing 314 – a world record then, a Rishikesh Kanitkar boundary under bad light sealed the match for India.

March, 1, 2003: India won the World Cup match in Centurion

Indian have never lost to Pakistan in the World Cup. However, chances of keeping that record intake look bleak against the fearsome bowling Pakistan pace attack. But thanks to the Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who played a pivotal 98-run innings, India successfully chased down 273 and won the match by six wickets. Sachin later said "In the 2003 World Cup, the game against Pakistan was the biggest of my life.”

March, 30, 2011: India won the match in Mohali, India

Team India had reached on the cusp of ending their 28 years World Cup drought. The semi-final pitted the old foes once again in the greatest stage. At the beautiful Mohali ground, the battle lived up to the expectations every cricket connoisseur. Team India after setting a modest total of 260, bowled economically to storm into the World Cup final. Despite Misbah`s resistance, a collective effort from the bowlers, especially from Ashish Nehra, sealed the match in India`s favour.
