Ellen Hansell was a female tennis player from the United States. She was the first ever winner of the women`s singles event of the US Open.
Jimmy Connors of United States is the only man to have won the US Open on three different surfaces.- grass in 1974, clay in 1976 and hard court in 1978.
Arthur Ashe of USA won the first ever US Open of the Open era in 1968. He won three major titles that include Australian, Wimbledon and US Open.
Before the Open era, Richard Sears holds the record of winning the most number of successive US Open singles titles. He won seven titles. However, post 1968, it is Roger Federer with five consecutive singles titles who holds the record.
The US Open became the first ever Grand Slam event to award equal money to both male and female players in 1973.
The US Open was first played in Newport in August 1881. Richard Sears was the first ever winner of the event and he went on to win it six more times.
