Goa State Profile
History
Going back as early as 8000 BC, Goa has a rich history. The banks of Kushavati are abundant with rock carving from the Paleolithic and Mesolithic ages. The Sumerian people in-habituated Goa around 2200 BC, which was followed by coming of migrants and aboriginals, who form the base of Goan culture.

Starting from Ashoka in the 3rd century BC, Goa was ruled by lots of dynasties like the Chutus of Karwar, Western Satraps, Bhojas of Gujarat, Kalachuris etc. Around 1312 Goa went under the governance of the Delhi Sultanate. But they were forced to surrender it to Harihara I of Vijayanagar Empire.

Finally Adil Shahi of the Bijapur dynasty annexed this state. In the year 1510, the Portugese threw apart the Bijapuri reign and established settlement at Velha Goa. In 1843, the capital was shifted to Panaji. After independence Goa refused to accede to the Indian sovereignty. Under Operation Vijay, Indian Army captured Goa from the Portuguese. While on 30th May 1987, Goa was made the twenty-fifth state of the nation.
