El Nino may be behind melting of Antarctica`s Pine Island Glacier

Last Updated: Friday, January 3, 2014, 19:42

The floating ice shelf at the tip of Pine Island Glacier, one of the biggest routes for ice to flow from Antarctica into the sea, has been melting and thinning for the past four decades causing the glacier to speed up and discharge more ice, researchers say.

New map shows how submerged Earth will look if all the ice melted

Last Updated: Thursday, November 7, 2013, 13:21

Maps created by National Geographic magazine have shown that a huge portion of eastern England, most of Denmark, and the US` entire eastern seaboard, Bangladesh and China`s huge chunk is going to get submerged if all the ice in the world melted.

Melting glaciers likely to have `minor` role in future sea-level rise

Last Updated: Tuesday, August 13, 2013, 14:55

A new study has suggested that melt-water that trickles down through the ice is likely to have a minor role in sea-level rise compared with other effects like iceberg production and surface melt.

Ice melt from icebergs to have massive impact on sea level rise

Last Updated: Tuesday, July 23, 2013, 18:49

Stretches of ice on the coasts of Antarctica and Greenland are at risk of rapidly cracking apart and falling into the ocean, which could worsen sea level rise, according to new findings.

Global warming 5 mn yrs ago may have raised sea levels by 20m

Last Updated: Monday, July 22, 2013, 12:23

Global warming caused 5 million years ago may have melted parts of Antarctica`s large ice sheets and caused sea levels to rise by about 20 metres.

Jury still out on possible extent of Antarctic`s ice sheet melting by 2100

Last Updated: Tuesday, July 16, 2013, 14:52

Researchers suggest that the time period of satellite observations of Greenland ice sheets and the Antarctic is still too short to be able to predict whether the accelerated loss of ice measured today will persist in future.
