Twitter has added the new long direct messages feature to the client. This is the first update in more than a year.

Micro-blogging platform Twitter today said it has increased the Direct Message (DM) limit to 10,000 characters from the existing 140, enabling the users to send longer private messages to friends.

You can also stop people you do not follow from sending you these new, extra-long DMs. You can do that by unchecking the "Receive Direct Messages from anyone" box in the Security and privacy sections in Twitter`s settings.
