MMTC floats tender for import of 10,000 tonnes of onion

State-owned MMTC has invited bids for import of 10,000 tonnes of onion from countries like Pakistan, Egypt, China and Afghanistan to boost domestic supply and check prices.

There has been a decline of Rs 20 per kg in the wholesale prices over the last few days. At the retail level, prices have come down to Rs 60 per kg while Mother Dairy and Nafed are selling onions at about Rs 50 per kg.

The government on Wednesday increased the minimum export price of onion by a sharp USD 175 per tonne to USD 475 a tonne -- a move aimed at discouraging outbound shipments and controlling surging domestic retail prices of the kitchen staple.
