New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs has deferred the decision on holding fresh elections in Delhi for now, as per reports on Monday.
Reports have also indicated that the Central government may decide to continue with President's Rule in the national capital till February next year if no party stakes claim to form the government before that.
Further, it is also being said that the Attorney-General may submit the decision by the government in the Supreme Court on September 9.
The SC had on August 05 asked the NDA government to clear its stand on Delhi Assembly. The Constitutional Bench of the apex court, headed by Justice HL Dattu, had asked the government to take decision on dissolving Delhi Assembly within a reasonable time.
It had also asked the question as to how long the MLAs elected by the public would sit idle at home.
SC's reaction came while hearing a petition filed by Aam Aadmi Party's convenor Arvind Kejriwal to dissolve the Delhi Assembly so that fresh elections could be held.
On July 05 the central government had opposed in the apex court AAP's plea for the dissolution of the house. The central government told the SC that it was not in favour of holding early elections in Delhi, IANS reported.
The state Assembly has been in suspended animation ever since Kejriwal resigned as the chief minister over the issue of Jan Lokpal Bill on February 14 this year after 49 days in office.
He was running the government with outside support of the Congress party.
Since AAP quit power, no party has staked claim to form the government.
AAP had time and again accused the BJP of running away from fresh elections in the national capital.
