‘Viva la Goa’ – Long live Goa, it’s not just a slogan for the average Goan, it is the sounding board of their belief in how life should be, how Goa should be.


Fiercely proud of their heritage and lifestyle, voices demanding that Goa be treated as ‘special’ have grown over the years.


Over the years, Goa has become the favourite spot for building holiday homes by the rich and the famous. The ‘holiday home’ culture has ticked up construction activity in the state, which eventually meant that thousands of labourers were imported from other states, changing the demographics.


Although ever welcoming, Goans have grown to be uncomfortable with the influx and hence are demanding special status – to ensure that only those domiciled in Goa can buy property in the state.


Congress president had earlier promised that the Centre will grant Goa’s wish but forward action has not been forthcoming.


Opposition parties, especially Goan political parties are sure to play up the issue. After all, no issue can match the emotional quotient as Goa for Goans.
