Patna: Accepting the verdict of the people in the bypolls in Bihar, BJP leader and former deputy chief minister of the state, Sushil Kumar Modi said on Monday that his party would review shortcomings and make all efforts to win the final round.
He posted on the micro-blogging site Twitter - “We accept the verdict. Lok Sabha we won, bye-elections they won. It is 1-1. We will review, make amends and make all effort to win the final round.”
He also said, “In 2009 NDA won 32 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar but lost 13 out of 18 Assembly bye-election seats and again returned with 3/4 majority after 10 months.”
In the results that were declared today, the BJP-led alliance trailed behind the
'grand alliance' of Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD and Nitish Kumar's JD(U), who won six seats, as against four seats won by the NDA.
Three months ago, BJP and its allies had put up a spectacular show in Lok Sabha polls, winning 33 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Nitish had got a jolt then with his party winning only two seats.
For the bypolls in Bihar, arch-rivals Lalu and Nitish had come together to fight the 'communal and divisive forces'.
Interestingly, Nitish along with the BJP had won the 2005 and 2010 Assembly polls in Bihar on the plank of good governance and development as against Lalu's 15 years of misrule and 'jungle raj'.
However, JD(U) and BJP parted ways last year over Nitish's discomfort pertaining to the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's ascendency in the party and his anointment as PM candidate for 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
BJP and its allies managed to win more than 300 seats in the General Elections and Modi took oath as Prime Minister of India on May 26.
The alliance stitched by ruling JD(U) with RJD and the Congress won Rajnagar (SC), Chapra and Mohiuddinnagar (all three by RJD), Jale and Parbatta (both JD-U), Bhagalpur (Congress), PTI reported.
Congress wrested Bhagalpur from BJP while JD(U) defeated BJP ally LJP of Ram Vilas Paswan in Parbatta, which was won by RJD in 2010.
Bouyed by the victory, JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar said the voters have expressed their "displeasure" with the Narendra Modi government and suggested that the alliance would be broadened to include Left parties to check BJP's "communal agenda".
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain attributed the party's poor showing to "prevailing" factors in Bihar and said the state leaders will accept total responsibility.
Assembly elections are due in Bihar next year.
