New Delhi, Sept 05: As artists set new price benchmarks at home, a handful of elite galleries will take the best of Indian contemporary art to Shanghai next week for a three-day show at the second edition of the ShContemporary Exhibition Centre.

The Sep 10-13 fair, the organisers said, promises to create intriguing dialogue between the Orient and the Occident by featuring the best galleries from the East juxtaposed with top Western galleries.

India will be represented by Bodhi Art Gallery, Chemould Gallery, Espace Gallery, The Guild, The Mint, The Threshold, Vadehra Art Gallery and Gallery SKE, Bangalore.

“The galleries and artists have been selected on the basis of excellent creative quality that goes beyond fashion and market trends,” said fair director Lorenzo Rudolf.

Over 130 galleries will show their works in the exhibition.

A section called `Best of Discovery` is of interest to the country. Indian art curator and critic Deeksha Nath has been selected as part of a group of “prestigious 11”, which include young artist Tushar Jog, who will be represented by Gallery Chemould, Vibha Galhotra by Gallery Espace, Ved Gupta by Gallery Threshold and sculptor Sumedh Rajendran, who will be represented by India`s most prestigious Vadehra Gallery.

This is the second time Bodhi Art Gallery will take part in the ShContemporary.

`Best of Discovery`, a special curated platform, will offer buyers an opportunity to discover a new generation of Asian artists. Building on the successful response of the first edition of the ShContemporary, the space and number of participants will increase from 20-32 artists.

The works will be arranged in a museum-like format in a large open space with no exhibitor wall separation. In other words, it will run like a tale of artistic forays replete with insight and intention.

The ShContemporary acts as a catalyst for exchanges between the Western and the Eastern art world.

The ShContemporary 2008 coincides with the opening of the Shanghai Biennale - one of the most extravagant art events in Southeast Asia, drawing collectors, curators and art enthusiasts.
