Singapore: India is the fifth largest tourism generating market for Singapore with 57,000 visitors from the country travelling in January to the island city-state, marking a 23 per cent year-on-year rise, Singapore Tourism Board data today said.

Indonesia with 174,000 tourist visitors, China 99,000, Australia 90,000 and Malaysia 68,000 are the other four top tourism generating markets for the Asian rest-and-recreation and shopping hub, the Board said.

These five markets accounted for 54 per cent tourist visitors in January, a 17.6 per cent increase from last year.

In 2009, 726,000 Indian tourists visited Singapore and spent SGD 891 million in terms of receipts.

However, tourist arrivals to Singapore was less last year due to the global economic crisis, with a 4.3 per cent year-on-year decline to 9.7 million visitors.

Earnings from tourists in 2009 also decreased 19 per cent year-on-year to SGD 12.4 billion.

Singapore tourism sector has picked up this January. The board said the average hotel room occupancy rate increased to 80.4 per cent during the month, resulting in revenue of SGD 137 million-- an 8.5 per cent rise from January 2009.
