Mumbai: Bollywood celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Mira Nair and Shekhar Kapur today expressed shock over the sudden demise of Hollywood actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Hoffman, 46, widely known for his Oscar-winning role in `Capote` and memorable performances in films like `The Master`, `Moneyball`and `The Hunger Games: Catching Fire`, was found dead in his New York City apartment of an apparent drug overdose on February 2.
"WHAT! Philip Seymour Hoffman Found Dead. In 2005, Hoffman won the Oscar and the Golden Globe Award for `Capote`... Exceptional artist," tweeted Amitabh Bachchan.
Superstar Shah Rukh called Hoffman `great actor`.
"It`s so difficult to accept that great actors are mortals. Thank you for the rides and the excitement Mr Philip Seymour. RIP," Shah Rukh posted.
Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur remembered meeting Hoffman very recently in New York.
"Remember long wonderful meeting with him in NYC. A man so incredibly humble about his genius. He was only 46. What a loss."
"Shocked to hear about the passing of @PhilipSeHoffman - he lived to make art and died for it. Terrible when the great ones leave us," tweeted director Mira Nair.
Actress-director Pooja Bhatt too expressed her grief.
"Just heard the most tragic news-Philip Seymour Hoffman dead at 46. What a terrible,terrible loss.`My soul is in good shape` Philip Seymour Hoffman. RIP," said Bhatt.
Actor Arshad Warsi feels his death is a waste of good talent.
"What a waste of good talent, such a fine actor.... Please say no to drugs... RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman," posted Arshad.
"RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman- you`ll always shine wherever you are," tweeted Aditi Rao Hydari.
"Philip Seymour Hoffman... Wanted so much more of you.. always sad to say sudden & early goodbyes. Warmest hug to you wherever you`re shining now," posted Shahana Goswami.
Uday Chopra condemned the used of drug by the actors.
"Cannot believe Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away... Successful, talented, young... Then dies of a drug OD what`s going on with Hollywood. RIP," he wrote.
Hollywood stars expressed shocked over the sudden passing
away of the actor.
"Just hearing about Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Devastating. What an amazingly gifted actor. RIP," tweeted Justin Timberlake.
Spike Lee, who directed Hoffman in the 2002 film `25th Hour`, shared a still from the movie.
"We lost one of the greats today. Philip Seymour Hoffman RIP my friend. You will be missed always and forever," Aaron Paul wrote.
Hoffman was born in New York in 1967.
Known for favouring tough roles in independent films, the actor has many great performances to his credit including his acting as author Truman Capote in 2005 film `Capote` that garnered him the best actor Oscar.
His other prominent roles include `Scent of a Woman`, `Almost Famous`, `25th Hour`, `Owning Mahowny`, `Before the Devil Knows You`re Dead`, `The Savages`, `Moneyball` and `The Ides of March`.
Hoffman made his feature film directorial debut with `Jack Goes Boating` in 2010 and was all set to direct his second film `Ezekiel Moss`. Actors Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal had recently joined the film.
His role as chief Gamesmaker Plutarch Heavensbee in the final two `Hunger Games` films is also incomplete.
Hoffman`s death from an apparent drug overdose brought the memories of another death, the passing away of Australian actor Heath Ledger in 2008 from a drug overdose in New York. Ledger, one of the rising stars, was just 29 when he died.
