Kalki Koechlin may be among the several foreign actresses struggling to create a niche for themselves in Bollywood, but the actress surely isn’t naïve. Aware of her background, her linguistic shortcomings and her unconventional looks, Kalki got her calling in parallel cinema and feels lucky to have made her debut with Anurag Kashyap`s critically acclaimed 2009 release ‘Dev.D’, also starring Abhay Deol.
Kalki was born to French parents in a small village in Pondicherry. She was studying in Ooty when her parents began to insist that she must attend the University of London. So, she studied drama and theatre in Goldsmiths, University of London, where she also worked with a theatre company called Theatre of Relativity for two years.
She later decided to move to Mumbai to try her luck in Indian cinema. She was doing modeling assignments for television commercials before being short-listed for the role of Chandramukhi (Chanda) in ‘Dev.D’, which surely proved to be a landmark in her career.
Kalki has also done an award winning commercial for Coca Cola with actor Imran Khan, which was even voted the ‘Best of the IPL’. Nevertheless, after her critically acclaimed performance in ‘Dev D’, Kalki now has various big movies to work in like Anurag kashyap’s ‘The Girl In Yellow Boots’ and Zoya Akthar’s multi-starrer `Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara`.
