Biography of Madonna

Madonna is an American recording artist, actress and an entrepreneur. The remarkable, hyper-ambitious Material Girl, who never stops re-inventing herself, has sold millions of records and CDs to adoring fans worldwide.

Born in Bay City, Michigan, Madonna was raised in the Detroit suburbs of Pontiac and Avon Township. She attended St Frederick`s and St Andrew`s Elementary Schools, and then West Middle School. She was known for her high grade point average, and achieved notoriety for her unconventional behaviour.

Madonna later attended Rochester Adams High School, and was a straight-A student and a member of the cheerleading squad. After graduating, she received a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan.

By the end of 1977, she dropped out of college and relocated to New York City. She had little money and worked as a waitress at Dunkin` Donuts. Madonna signed a singles deal with Sire, a label belonging to Warner Bros Records. Her debut single, ‘Everybody’, was released on October 6, 1982, and became a dance hit. She achieved global recognition after the release of her second studio album: ‘Like a Virgin’ in 1984.

The 1980s was Madonna`s boom decade, and she dominated the music charts with a succession of multi-million-selling albums, and her musical and fashion influence on young women was felt around the globe.

Her other albums include Like a Virgin (1984) with the hit single ‘Material Girl’, Ray of Light (1998), Music (2000), American Life (2003), Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005) and Hard Candy . Madonna has also acted in over a dozen movies, including ‘Dick Tracy’ (1990) and ‘A League of Their Own’ (1992). Madonna also acted in the critically acclaimed film ‘Evita’, for which she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category.
