Bollywood Blockbuster of the decade

crousel

Gadar - Ek Prem Katha

Romance always works at the Box Office. The more obstacles lovers face on the 70mm, the bigger is the moolah that the filmmakers take home. And ‘Gadar - Ek Prem Katha’ (2001) was the first film of the decade to capitalise on this mantra. Directed by Anil Sharma, this Sunny Deol and Amisha Patel starrer did a whopping Rs 75 crores business during it’s run in the theatres.

Hit factor: What seemed like a stereotypical ‘rich-girl, poor-boy’ plot, soon developed into a compelling love-story with partition and riots as the backdrop. An otherwise seemingly casual affair between a truck driver and a lady hailing from a political family was turned into an epic tale of love. Many factors varying from sound direction, strong performances and melodious music worked in its favour and made it one of the top grossers of the decade.

Dhoom 2

Boasting of a fabulous cast, ‘Dhoom 2’ made enough for the producers to make profits even after paying fat cheques to Aishwarya, Hrithik, Abhishek and Bipasha. Directed by Sanjay Gandhvi, the film raked-in an astounding sum of Rs 80.64 crore at the Box Office besides making millions from the endless brands that were advertised in the film.

Hit Factor: As if Aishwarya at her skimpiest best coupled with Bipasha’s flesh flashing act weren’t enough, the film had some lean machines with some mean horsepower to leave the audience spellbound. Besides the excessive promotions, the film became an instant hit for its international appeal, packaging and the passionate lip-lock between Ash and Hrithik

Krrish

India’s first superhero flick, ‘Krrish’ had to be a blockbuster! The film that was termed a hit even before its release made an astounding Rs 73,47,00,000 at the Box Office. And this is apart from the millions that it made by selling the merchandise inspired by the movie. A sequel to an already hit flick ‘Koi Mil Gaya’, ‘Krrish’ was the second highest grosser of the year 2006 – the first being ‘Dhoom 2’.

Hit factor: Jaw dropping action sequences coupled with some terrific visual effects, ‘Krrish’ became an instant hit with Gen X. Awe-striking performances by Hrithik and Priyanka under the able guidance of Rakesh Roshan were some of the other reasons that catapulted the film into instant fame.

Om Shanti Om

Deepika Padukone’s launch vehicle opposite Shah Rukh Khan, ‘Om Shanti Om’ was a fine tribute to typical ‘masala’ films. Directed by Farah Khan, this 2007 film made throbbing Rs 79,42,00,000.

Hit factor: With Shah Rukh Khan as the protagonist, ‘Om Shanti Om’ was already deemed a hit. A Diwali release, the film left all competition behind as it capitalised on the festive season. From costumes, make-up to the lavish 1970’s sets, the film brought a nostalgic feel as it brought alive a bygone era. Apart from the grand star cast, the theme of reincarnation saw the audience thronging the ticket counters.

Welcome

The critics might have bashed this one, as a no brainer, but ‘Welcome’ was the second highest grossing film of 2007 followed by ‘Partner’. A multi-starrer, the film was a laugh riot that saw the makers laughing their way to the bank. In all, the film made a cool Rs 70,75,00,000.

Hit factor: The golden pairing of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kiaf did wonders for this one. Besides the dashing couple, the film had some hilarious scenes from actors like Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Nana Patekar.

Ghajini

Aamir Khan justified his ‘perfectionist’ image as he bagged applause and moolah both for his iron-pumping act in ‘Ghajini’. Playing the role of a grieving lover, Aamir Khan stunned all with his yet another moving performance. Breaking all records the film became the biggest grosser with Rs 118 crore to its credit.

Hit factor: Firstly Aamir Khan and then his eight-pack abs! Revolving around the concept of anterograde amnesia or short-term memeory loss in simple terms, the film was a complete package of action, tragedy, humour and romance.

Singh is Kinng

The film that made Akshay Kumar the king of Bollywood - a title held by SRK for long, was the second highest grosser of 2008. Taking home a sum of Rs 68,48,00,000, ‘Singh is Kinng’ was the unanimous winner of 2008 till Aamir came out with ‘Ghajini’ in December.

Hit factor: Akshay Kumar in ‘Sardar’ get-up won hearts as he played the village buffoon. With a rural backdrop and Katrina Kaif’s Barbie doll act the film was marvelled for its comic timing.

3 Idiots

By far the highest moolah churning movies of all times, ‘3 Idiots’, has broken all records and is now touted as the ‘new Sholay of Bollywood’. And why not? Banking a throbbing Rs 240 cr, in just 10 days after its release, it has overthrown all its predecessors. With trade analyst expecting the film to cross the Rs 300 crore mark, ‘3 Idiots’ is by far the most intelligent movies of our times.

Hit factor: Firstly, an amazing script perfectly portrayed onscreen by maverick actors like Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, R Madhavan and Kareena Kapoor under the creative vision of Rajkumar Hirani. The film had just the right dose of every human emotion. And last but not the least, Aamir Khan, who weaves one wonder after the other.
