For years, Hindi cinema has made stars with every super hit movie they have churned out of its flick factory. And along with the cine icons, the audience have adored, praised, imitated and adorned the clothing that their fave actresses have put on their frame. Bollywood loves fashion. This proves why behind every hit star there is an iconic look that is meant to be cherished forever.

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun

Designer Neeta Lulla hit the bull’s eye in the business of Bollywood fashion by knitting the embellished nine yard wonder for Madhuri in the movie. During the early 90’s, saree stores across the nation were bombarded with requests from customers who were eager to stack the gorgeous deep purple saree in their closet.

Mr. India

Those who were born before the nineties would vouch for how the country’s masses went in frenzy over Sridevi’s chiffon blue saree in the movie. Besides that, her sexy dance moves and the rainy backdrop only added spice to the popular number.

Devdas

Bhansali’s magnum opus was not just a masterpiece for its storyline, flawless performances by the actors and the larger than life sets, but also for the ornate lehengas and sarees that Ash and Madhuri confidently pulled-off along with their respective roles. ‘Devdas’ set a new benchmark for its lavish garbs, thus making way for Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla and Neeta Lulla to be the most to-go-to couturiers.

Jab We Met

Remember that bubbly, chirpy and lively Geet from Bhatinda? Every girl who watched the movie got smitten by Kareena’s never-seen-before look that teamed a simple long white tee with Patiala salwar and colourful bangles. The patiala-tee fever hit the college campuses like a fashion missile and the trend went viral among the younger lot.

Raja Hindustani

The Karisma Kapoor era began with this movie and it re-launched her career in Bollywood, credit: Lolo’s dear designer buddy Manish Malhotra, who dressed her in elegant churidars, maxi dresses, sarees and not to forget that Little Red Dress that clean bowled men and women alike!

Dil to Pagal Hai

A dreamy, romantic and idealist Madhuri Dixit draped in pastel hued, well-stitched chiffon salwar kameez instantly became every one’s pin up girl. Also, Karisma Kapoor’s sporty dresses revamped the way India’s youth wore their western attires.
