Dilip Kumar, originally named as Mohammad Yusuf Khan, was a ladies’ man in the good ol’ 1940s — the time when he kick started his six-decade-long acting career. He has romanced a good number of Bollywood beauties in his typical style that went on to gain mass popularity. So, here we celebrate the tragedy king Dilip Kumar’s some of the most popular onscreen and off screen romances.

Saira Banu

Saira desired to have Dilip as her husband even before she joined films and the wish was granted by destiny and how! The couple did a good lot of films together like ‘Gopi’, ‘Sagina’, ‘Duniya’and ‘Bairaag’, all of which were applauded by the viewers.

Madhubala

This spellbinding beauty delivered a box office long runner like ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ but it is a little known fact that Dilip and Madhubala were engaged to be married and deeply in love till they broke up on account of a tiff that took place between the actress’s father and Kumar. The matter was left resolved and eventually the love birds parted ways for good. While Dilip moved on in life it was Madhubala who loved him till her last breathe.

Nimmi

Once upon a time there lived a girl named Nimmi who yearned day in and day night to romance a star like Dilip Kumar on the big screen. The wishes of “the poor little rich girl from India” (as she was later fondly called by the London critics) were granted by lady luck which resulted in a successful opening of films like “Deedar”, “Aan”, “Daag” and “Amar” thereby entertaining the cine goers of the time.

Kamini

While there were several beautiful women who longed to work and romance with Dilip Kumar in real and reel life, it was Kamini who got lucky by winning Dilip’s affections and thus became the first love of his life. The relationship did not work in the long term though but the actor-duo did work together in Shaheed (1948), Nadiya Ke Paar (1949), Shabnam (1949) and Arzoo (1950).

Vyajanthimala

During the time Vyajanthimala worked with Dilip Kumar in films such as ‘Devdaas’, ‘Naya Daur’ and ‘Madhumati’, there were rumoured to have fallen for each others’ charms and went about dating for sometime before finally calling off their relationship.

Waheeda Rehman

Waheeda and Dilip made a great combo on the marquee and together they spun magic to deliver movies like ‘Ram Aur Shyam’, ‘Aadmi’ and ‘Dil Diya Dard Liya’ during 60s and ‘Mashaal’ in the mid 80’s.

Nargis

‘Andaz’ (1949), which starred Nargis, Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor, was one of the best movies of that time. Overall, Nargis and Dilip did five films together during their acting stint.
