‘Royal Bollywood star’ Saif Ali Khan turns 43

Happy Birthday Saif Ali Khan!

Son of late Nawab of Pataudi, Mansoor Ali Khan and Bollywood starlet Sharmila Tagore, Saif Ali Khan was born with a silver spoon. Unlike his cricketer father, Junior Nawab of Pataudi chose to enter the world of cinema and thereby follow in his mother’s footsteps. With time, the royal star created a niche for himself in Bollywood. From essaying the role of a romantic boy in ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’ to playing the dreadful character of ‘Langda Tyagi’ in ‘Omkara’, Saif has evolved as an actor.


As Saif Ali Khan turns a year older today, let’s take a look at his journey.

Main Khiladi Tu Anari

Saif Ali Khan made a dream debut in 1992, with Yash Raj’s ‘Parampara’, but it failed to create ripples at the Box Office. But nothing stopped Saif from holding on to his faith to deliver hit films. He worked in ‘Aashiq Awara’, ‘Pehchaan’, ‘Imtihaan’ but it was ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’ and ‘Yeh Dillagi’ that Saif succeeded in making is presence felt. He went on to deliver multi-starrer hits like ‘Kachche Dhaage’, ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’.

Dil Chahta Hai

Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ gave a new lease of life to Saif’s acting career. It helped him prove his acting prowess and his performance as Sameer in the film left the audience spell bound. He essayed the role of a young generation ‘cool’ guy impeccably. The movie was a super hit and it also bagged a National award. The presence of the other two leads actors- Akshaye Khanna and Aamir Khan didn’t overshadow Saif`s performance. He was appreciated for his acting and was awarded with the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role.

Kal Ho Na Ho

After ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, Saif Ali Khan proved his mettle yet again with his commendable act in Nikhil Advani’s ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’. The movie went on to become a Box Office success. The star cast included superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta, but Saif’s performance had a very much appreciated. Khan was awarded with the Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category.

Hum Tum

If ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was a turning point in Saif’s career, Kunal Kohli`s romantic comedy ‘Hum Tum’, helped Saif enter the elite A-list. Saif plays a Casanova, who eventually falls in love with the character played by Rani Mukerji and thereby transforms into a responsible man. Saif’s immaculate comic timing not only helped him bag the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role, but also the ‘National Award for Best Actor’ in 2005.

Parineeta

It was time for Saif to surprise the audience by shunning stereotypical romantic, humorous roles for a complex one. With Pradeep Sarkar`s ‘Parineeta’, Saif ali Khan emerged as an actor par excellence. Saif was also nominated for Filmfare Best actor Award.

Salaam Namaste

Saif Ali Khan was back as a happy-go-lucky boy with Aditya Chopra’s ‘Salaam Namaste’. Needless to say light comedy roles are Saif’s forte and he proved yet again that such roles are tailor made for him. His pairing with Preity Zinta was appreciated and the movie garnered rave review.

Omkara

Vishal Bhardwaj`s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ – ‘Omkara’- gave Saif Ali Khan an opportunity to uncover his hidden talent. Saif’s role as Langda Tyagi left one and one in awe. He was honoured with the Filmfare for Best Negative Role.

Go Goa Gone

Saif Ali Khan’s ‘Illuminati Films’ was the first production house to come up with a movie based on zombies in the country. ‘Go Goa Gone’ had play a Zombie hunter in the film which also starred Kunal Khemu, Vir Das, Anand Tiwari and Puja Gupta. Saif looked mighty impressive with his blonde hair and a quirky Russian accent.
