Worst movies of 2012

crousel

Good films, bad films

It has been a good year at the movies. Bollywood churned out all sorts of films- some very interesting, some extremely stereotypical, some refreshingly new and some just plain boring. While the list of good films is a long one, we do have quite a few films which were bizarre to say the least. Among them, many sank at the Box Office; but surprisingly some did quite well, in spite of critics panning them.

We take a look at the ten worst films of 2012. This is just our thinking; it doesn’t mean that the actors in those films are bad per se; just that these films didn’t work for them. So, all those ardent fans – please don’t break things around after going through this list.

Joker

If you are talking of bad films this year, ‘Joker’ perhaps comes at the top of your mind. Shirish Kunder’s ambitious film had potential, no doubt. A village in India, known as ‘Paglapur’, finds no place in India’s map. A native of the village, Agastya, now a NASA scientist, plots a devious plan to create crop circles to gain the government’s attention towards the village. The story, inclusion of aliens, Chitraganda’s sensuous item number and presence of Akshay Kumar – all could have worked wonders for the film; instead, the film just failed horribly.

Aiyyaa

Loud. That’s the first word that comes to mind when we think of ‘Aiyyaa’. In a bid to make a sparkling comeback, Rani Mukerjee decided to do a heroine-centric film and dabbled in comedy. But the plans went awry because of all the over-the-top moments in the film. The film’s humour failed to evoke any kind of joy in anyone’s heart and instead just gave a major headache to the viewers.

Kya Super Kool Hai Hum

A sex comedy with oodles of SMS forwards put in place of actual story and dialogues. That’s what KSKHH was. No laughs, heroines with deadpan expressions, and a very annoying Tushhar Kapoor. Yes, the film had all of these and much more.

crousel

Rush

The makers were in a rush to finish the film. It did try to raise some very important and pertinent issues about media ethics, but a weak script and horrible set of actors could not salvage the film. Songs were forced into the narrative, a woody Neha Dhupia and an equally blank Sagarika Ghatge couldn’t provide the much-needed oomph in the film and a lone Emraan Hashmi seemed to have resigned to the miserable fate that the film met at the Box office.

Bhoot Returns

One upon a time, a maverick Ram Gopal Varma had made some outstanding thrillers. His ‘Bhoot’ is undoubtedly one of the scariest films that Hindi cinema has ever seen and yet its sequel fell flat on its face. The movie failed to provide the chills and was touted as Manisha Koirala’s comeback film. We say, starring in a multi-starrer as a hero’s sister would have been a better option, Manisha!

crousel

Son of Sardaar

Ajay Devgn’s big Diwali release was pitted against Yash Chopra’s swansong ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. The film garnered a lot of hype before its release – thanks to the legal battle its producer was fighting against Yash Raj Films. But when it released, it was an agonizing three hours that the audience spent at the theatre watching the film. With a done-to-death storyline, poor jokes, stereotypes galore, ‘Son of Sardaar’ lacked any sense whatsoever. And yet, unbelievably so, it managed to earn Rs 100 crores.

crousel

Rowdy Rathore

The film did make it to the famed 100 crores club but content-wise, it is perhaps one of the most regressive films in recent times. The amazing Akshay Kumar tried every trick in the book to make this a masala entertainer, but when a story’s ultimate aim is to provide nonsensical gory action sequences, how can one expect the film to have any logic whatsoever?

crousel

Jism 2

A woody Sunny Leone, her heaving bosom, a bizarre story line, and lack of sex. Pooja Bhatt’s erotic thriller promised a lot to the viewers before the film’s release, but the so called erotic scenes seemed thanda which was a major let down for Leone fans. The film could have still salvaged itself, had it had a good story line and some impactful performances by the lead actors. But there too, it disappointed majorly.

crousel

Department

In spite of Amitabh Bachchan playing an important role in the film, and RGV promoting the item girl Nathalia Kaur’s song more than the film, ‘Department’ was an epic fail from the word go. Nathalia and her sexy image could not salvage this horrible cop-underworld drama.

crousel

Ajab Gazabb Love

The film had Jackky Bhagnani. Do you remember any hit film from Jackky Bhagnani’s stable? No? Neither can we.

crousel

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamal

Priyadarshan can also go wrong at times. Not every film of this filmmaker has to be funny. And ‘Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal’ is a prime example of it. The film fell badly short as far as the humour department is concerned and even the presence of good actors like Nana Patekar, Paresh Rawal and Shreyas Talpade could not save this sinking ship.
