Kolkata: A commemorative stamp on 19th century poet and educationist Henry Louis Vivian Derozio was released here today.
Chief Post Master General, West Bengal Circle Rameshwari Handa released it in the presence of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at the Writers` Buildings, state headquarters of the Derozio Birth Bi-centenary Celebration Committee.
Minister of State for Minority Development Abdus Sattar lauded Derozio, who invigorated a large group of students to think independently which led to the Young Bengal group playing a key role in the Bengal renaissance.
"Derozio was a rationalist. He did not believe in prejudice and superstition. Derozio and his young Bengal movement is still relevant in the present situation."
Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya advocated following his ideals to make society free from superstition and illogical thinking.
