Uruguay

FIFA Ranking: 7 (Last Updated 05 Jun 2014)

History: Uruguay has won two World Cups. They won the inaugural 1930 showdown on home soil and 20 years later, were crowned world champions again. They have finished fourth on three occasions - 1954, 1970 and 2010. In 2010, Diego Forlan won the Golden Ball for being the most outstanding player in the tournament.

Qualifying report: Uruguay got off to a very bad start in the South American qualifiers, collecting just two points from a possible 18. They hit form just in time to finish fifth, thus booking the inter-continental play-off spot; where they hammered Jordan 5-0 over two legs and sealed a ticket to Rio.

Star Players: Luis Suarez (scored 11 goals in the qualification round) plays for Liverpool (England) at club level. One of the most lethal attackers in the game, Suarez was instrumental in Liverpool`s rise in stature in the 2013-14 season. The forward was the highest scorer in the Premier League and his goal tally was also the highest for Uruguay in the qualifiers.

Edinson Cavani is a box-to-box striker. He plays for Paris Saint Germain (France) at the club level. The former Napoli star joined PSG for a club record fee in summer 2013. He and Suarez form a mouth watering partnership up-front that can unnerve any side in Brazil.
