History: The United States of America will be playing in their 10th World Cup, and seventh in succession. They were third in 1930 and quarter-finalists in 2002, losing 1-0 to Germany. They suffered a last-place finish at France 1998. In 2006 they went out in the first round again, this time in Germany before reaching the Round of 16 in South Africa in 2010.
Qualifying report: The Americans had an ominous start to their final round of qualifying in the CONCACAF zone, losing 2-1 on the road in Honduras. But after that, coach Klinsmann led his side to a first-place finish in the six-team Hexagonal. They won an astounding seven from their ten games.
Star Players: Clint Dempsey plays for Seattle Sounders (USA ) at club level. With eight goals during the qualifying campaign, and 36 in 103 caps, captain Clint Dempsey continues to provide the attacking thrust he demonstrated so regularly in the Premier League with Fulham and Tottenham.

Nicknamed `Zeus`, the 27-year-old has made lightning quick progression in international football.
